2023 comes to an end - Progen Power a year in Review

Hi, it’s Alex here, Managing Director for Progen Power.

It’s almost the end of another year of trading for Progen Power and it doesn’t feel like 12 months has passed since I last wrote one of these.

We’ve had another fantastic year, meeting lots of new clients and powering lots of new projects.

Early 2023 saw us have our haulage operator’s license granted by the traffic commissioner’s office, countless hours of work and training went on behind the scenes to become fully compliant and so far our lorries have clocked up thousands of miles this year delivering our equipment to London, Wales, Cornwall, Devon and Cambridgeshire.

Spring 2023 was a busy period for us in terms of preparation for the summer months, we almost doubled our cable stock during this time and undertook an extensive test and inspection regime of our existing equipment. As well as cable, we also added hundreds more floodlights and emergency light fittings to our fleet to meet the high summer demand.

The summer didn’t disappoint with multiple back-to-back shows throughout June, July and into August where we then stepped up into concurrent running of back-to-back shows in both the UK and Ireland all the way into mid-September. The team performed magnificently and the feedback from the clients was incredible to hear, with all of our major project’s customers signing up for more from us in 2024.

This year we also took a deep dive into the construction industry and recently appointed our first dedicated construction sector sales manager. Simon Smith joined us from a plant sales background and with recent experience with a local JCB Dealer, he’s been able to hit the ground running with existing knowledge JCB power products and has already secured major contracts with some of the Southwest’s largest construction firms.

In terms of fleet growth, we added more 200kVA generators to our fleet this year to meet the high demand for this size unit. We find these units to be the perfect size for stage power in terms of their physical size for transportation and of their capabilities when running in synchronised groups.

Also added to the fleet were a number of 40kVA Stage V road towable generators, with their Stage V compliance and 100 litre fuel tank, these have been popular for TV & Film location shoots in central London. We also placed a significant order for several new 60kVA Stage V generators from Watling JCB, these are due to join us in January 2024.

There have been a few moves within the ranks of Progen Power too, in November I stepped up from Technical & Operations Director to Managing Director.  We look forward to welcoming a new engineer, Max to the business in January 2024 as field service engineer, Max comes to us directly from the Royal Navy with extensive experience in power generation and diesel engine propulsion.

We finished off 2023 with an exciting project for another new customer, providing the power infrastructure for the Prime Minister's Christmas market and Christmas light switch on in Downing Street. It was a truly festive day with cold temperatures in the capital, a flurry of genuine snow and an exciting look behind the door of number 10. We very much look forward to working with this customer again in the future.

As for 2024, the year ahead looks very exciting. We’re still actively recruiting for more engineers to continue supporting our external generator maintenance customers as well as our own events and construction projects.

Our projects team are working on the planning for some huge new multiyear projects as well as continuing to support the existing multiyear contracts won this year, building on the fantastic reputation that our teams have worked so hard to create over the last 24 months since we began this exciting journey.

Our fleet will continue to grow in Q1 and Q2 with more orders for Generators, Fuel Tanks, Cable, Distribution and Lighting on the horizon.

As we wind down now for a well-earned Christmas break, myself and Andy want to send our Christmas wishes to all our hard-working staff, our fantastically loyal customers, our sub-contractors and our suppliers and we look forward to seeing you all in 2024.
